One of the benefits of a cavity wall is that the air core provides a natural back up system for redirecting any water that may get into the wall. If you are planning on implementing a composite wall you lose this inherent ability. However, there are alternatives. Some companies produce plastic drain board that can be placed in the wall to create a cavity like system. The drainage board can fit around wall ties and joint reinforcment. Mortaring brick directly to back up block creates essentially a barrier wall and will more than likely resist most if not all water penetration. It may be a good idea to
specify an integral admixture in the backup block. This will provide additional protection from any water that may get through.
The National Concrete Masonry Association has conducted estensive research on tornado resistant building techniques. You may want to contact their engineering department to find a few more alternatives not mentioned above. NCMA can be contacted at 703-713-1900 or check out their website at www.ncma.org
