This guy probably needs to have his mortar repointed. If there are
bonding problems, no water repellent is going to help. Certainly, he
should stay away from Thompsons and any other film-forming type coating.
The "home-remedy" his builder suggests is also a film-forming type
coating. It may work initially, but will eventually wear away or cause
spalling problems.
